Licensed Teacher with experience in the Wichita Public Schools who is passionate about advocating for quality education. Kathy is committed to ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Welcome, and thank you for visiting my campaign page! I am excited to share that we have successfully progressed beyond the Primary stage, and I am deeply grateful for your support thus far. As we move into the next phase, continued dedication and hard work will be essential.
Over the past four years, it has been my privilege to serve our community and work diligently to enhance the quality of education for all our students. My experiences as a current Board of Education member, a retired business owner, and a licensed teacher in both the Wichita Public Schools and the Derby School District have given me a unique perspective and a strong commitment to education. These roles have provided me with the skills to manage complex projects, balance budgets, and champion innovative solutions, always keeping the needs of our students at the forefront of every decision. By working closely with students, teachers, and administrators, I have developed a deep understanding of the challenges our schools face and the opportunities before us.
Academic success is a key element of this campaign, which holds that all students should have access to the necessary tools, resources, and guidance. Recent data indicate that current performance levels are below proficiency standards. The objective is to offer students a high-quality education to increase academic achievement.
Although phonics is an essential component, academic success additionally requires proficiency in reading comprehension—the capacity to understand, interpret, and interact with sophisticated texts. This skill is regarded as a measure of literacy and future outcomes. Expanding instructional approaches to include comprehension strategies, critical thinking, and analytical skills is suggested to support students' academic, professional, and personal development. Academic success is approached as an ongoing commitment. Maintaining evidence-based instruction such as LTRS, increasing attention to reading comprehension, and implementing oversight are recommended methods for improving educational outcomes.
Fiscal Stewardship – Effective fiscal stewardship involves accountability to constituents—students, families, staff, and taxpayers—who trust school board members with public resources. This approach includes recognizing how funds reflect community priorities and values and encourages ongoing communication with stakeholders to inform financial decisions. Transparent reporting and clear justification for budget choices allow the public to see how resources benefit the district. Board members aim to balance efficiency and empathy, ensuring stewardship reflects the realities and interests of those served. Prioritizing the community in financial matters helps build trust and demonstrates commitment to the district’s well-being.
Integrity – Integrity promotes accountability and requires that decisions be made based on evidence and principles rather than expedience or popularity. This supports fairness within the educational system, aiming for every student to receive appropriate consideration and support.
Throughout my tenure, I have implemented initiatives that have benefited our schools, such as establishing a JROTC leadership program at Wilbur Middle School, expanding mental health resources, and fostering partnerships with local businesses. The approval and implementation of the LTRS program have effectively contributed to the improvement of third grade reading skills.
